Friday, November 11, 2011: Commemoration in Middelkerke.IMG 2762

Traditionally, on the occasion of the armistice commemoration on November 11, the city council  presented program
dedicated to peace. On November 11, 1918, guns fell silent. The hope that this would be the last war, proved to be in vain.
The Second World War came sooner then anybody could have suspected.
A free breakfast, given by the city council,  was enjoyed by everybody in the refectory of the
local primary school.
On 11/11/11 both wars were commemorated. In Leffinge, an afternoon program was arranged that same day.
Bagpipe players marched procession-wise to the monument in front of the city hall, remembering the fallen of both world wars.

November 11th, 2011:

Roger Muylaertplein - Leffinge.IMG 2818

On this occasion, Leffinge remembered their local war hero, Roger Muyllaert.Muyllaert not only saved a lot of people from drowning, but also thwarted the destruction of the Leffinge bridge during the second world war.Roger was also counsellor and baker for many years. Reason enough to dedicate a street to this local hero by giving it his name. The ceremony was conducted on the dorpstreet, 50 meters from where Roger had his bakery.

October 2, 2011: Tattoo in Zaventem.IMG 2738

A Tattoo is not an often organised event in our region. So, for those who have never seen such an event, a few words on the subject will perhaps be welcome.
A  “tattoo” was originally a military drum signal, summoning the soldiers back to their barracks whilst enjoying the spoils of the pub. The bartender then literally had to close the tap or “taptoo” which became tattoo.
Today, tattoos are organized as musical entertainment. Internationally renowned military bands and musical groups of all sorts and combinations are “onparade”.
The bands walk  the tattoo grounds and entertain the audience with military-type music. Many tattoos are now executed by civilian orchestras, giving their best in great visually as well as auditary attractive performances.

On October 2 we peformed in Zaventem where we witnessed a surprise “Glen Miller” style introduction by an overseas world-renowned band. Three bands, stylish completely diverse, the proceded with an really attractive program.
Next came the Brussels Police Band followed by a great playing drums and pipe band, the “Ghent District Highlanders”. To top it all off, the "Band Rijnmond", an internationally renowed group from the Netherlands treated us to a surprisingly beautiful music and choreography performance . In short: a great show not to be missed. We also enjoyed the animation organised around something the Belgians very much enjoy eating,  the famous Belgian chicory, with lots of small stalls selling all kinds of delicious produce such as the chicory, grapes, endives etc..
For sure, a day to remember.
